Our approach to migrate from Iron Speed to MVC:

As our organization has helped many Iron Speed users over the last decade, I wanted to share the approach we are taking to migrate applications from Iron Speed to the .NET MVC platform.

At the core of Iron Speed was a great framework, which we all got to know as BaseClasses.  In order to have a similar foundation, we built a solid code base that helps design, develop and deliver MVC solutions with the same efficiency as Iron Speed.

Please review the short video (approx 40 minutes) which will focus on the features we have put together based on feedback from our customers.  Please note that the User Interface can be adjusted to suit anyone's needs.

If you want to explore further or review any of the features in more detail, feel free to contact us at info@lightspeedsolutions.com or 631-752-2000.

Akesh,

Well done.

I remember your demo from a couple of years ago.  Impressed then.  Very, very impressed now.

I second his recommendation of Telerik's UI tools and Mindscape's Lightspeed ORM.

I would encourage anyone interested to spend 40 minutes of their time watching this video.  Unlike some of the other claims made on this forum, this technology is real, proven and is delivering now.

We are migrating all our client projects to this new framework; the work that LightSpeed have done on their platform is impressive enough to convince our clients to migrate.

I'm clearly not impartial, we've made no secret of our relationship with LightSpeed and our use of this platform as you can read here, but if you are considering migration, watch the video and get in touch if you are interested to know more.

That's great if you have their platform...  Not so great if you don't.  The value of Iron Speed is that anyone can build n-tier applications.

This approach will ultimately work out I am sure, as long as you are ready to embrace new technology and a new(er) way of doing things, accepting other vendor tools.

All of that being said, there is no immediate rush to move away from Iron Speed, just because MVC is there and waiting.  Take your time to learn the latest new technology and get it right, and not just rush off to the latest shiny toy.

Iron Speed still works.  I have two large projects in Iron Speed, new work, and it still delivers the same way as always.  I know that unless Iron Speed Designer gets resurrected, it won't last forever, but for now it still works great.  This gives me the breathing room to consider other technologies, and carefully decide which direction to move to.

When I see this released as a commercial product, I will review it the same way I am doing with a host of other Iron Speed competitors.

Thanks for the update Miles.  I do agree that this is not a replacement for Iron Speed – it is not intended to be.  Our solution is intended to help customers who are keen to migrate to MVC for risk mitigation and keep up with the latest in web development and do so more efficiently.  It is not a code-generating product like Designer.  We did not want to create a commercial product as we are not using Code Generator to build our solution.  Our solution is a stand-alone visual studio project which has the foundation developed and ready for the front end to be built in an accelerated manner.  One can always start with the MVC Project wizard in Visual Studio, but it will lack a lot of features which are needed for a full-fledged application.  This include some of the most common features requested by all users, such as:

  • Integrated Security Management
  • Single Grid or Show Table HTML 5 page which bring in features such as Custom Views, Sorting, Grouping, Export and Pagination as a start
  • Single Add/Edit/View page for each table
  • Dynamic loading for child pages for faster response
  • Option for MDI mode
  • Microsoft Ribbon like Menus
  • Integration of Kendo UI controls and charts
  • Ajax loading of Drop Down Lists eliminating the need for Large List Selectors
  • Metadata based configuration such as Make/Model/Year and Workflow implementations
  • Multi Tenant ready
  • Entity Framework based Business Layer
  • Integration of Telerik Reporting
  • Integrated Dashboard with Dashlets tied to Security
We wanted to make the transition from Iron Speed to MVC as seamless as possible.  With a team of 10 developers who has been working with Iron Speed for over 12 years, our organization has in-depth knowledge of Iron Speed to assist our clients with migration into MVC platform.

The final solution follows the same approach to build, extend or maintain MVC applications as Iron Speed where table are included in the Entity Framework and then the controllers and views are built.

If you are looking for another Iron Speed where you can generate the pages, then our solution is not the optimal model.

In case you are looking for a future proof platform which can then be extended from MVC to MVVM with more client side scripting in AngularJS or Ember for more user friendly customized pages, then this roadmap will serve you better.  In case you are looking for the true separation of layers, have the front end development done in true sense with no dependency on the backend, the migration to MVC model is the foundation to make it happen.

Feel free to contact us for a personalized demo catered to your needs to evaluate if our MVC approach is the right fit for your needs.

Akesh can provide a more direct answer, but I believe LightSpeed Solutions has developed their own in-house replacement for Iron Speed.  I don't think it is available for resale, but I would check with Akesh to be sure....

Best,

Miles
