I made the mistake of installing Visual Studio 2017 on my development PC.
Since I did that, I can no longer do a "Rebuild All" in ISD 11.1 using VS2010.

When I do, I get:

Microsoft (R) Visual Studio Version 10.0.40219.1.
Copyright (C) Microsoft Corp. All rights reserved.

Visual Studio has encountered an unexpected error.

That's all the detail it gives me, nothing more.
I tried uninstalling-reinstalling ISD 11.1 and VS2010, same problem.
I tried uninstalling VS2017 and then uninstalling-reinstalling ISD 11.1 and VS2010, but I still get this error message.

The app compiled before, just fine. It still now compiles just fine in VS2010. It just won't Rebuild All in ISD 11.1.

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem? I really don't want to wipe my machine and have to install everything all over again.

Kinda glad I didn't install VS2017.  Was about to then reconsidered.

I'm guessing it may have something to do with a .net upgrade that VS2017 installed (I saw that on the install program).  You might try uninstalling .net and rolling back to a previous version (if possible?)

Is there any way to get more details out of ISD about what the problem is, with VS2010?

If you have created a restore point before VS 2017 installation, it might be a good idea to do a system restore.

Cheers,

That's bad! This case is quite difficult because no one will dare to duplicate what you've done. I believe, even ISD 12.20 will not work with VS 2017.  I guess it is going to be a lot of trials and errors, for you, to hit the bull's eye.

Load vs 2010 and make sure some extension doesn't need updating and that all extension are loading without an exception. Your other option is to drop down to a VS 2010 command prompt (there is a menu link for that) then use the vs compiler to compile the application and note the exception. You might still end up with the same exception though.

I am running Windows 7 Pro x64. I have installed VS2017.  I can load and compile without error with both ISD 11 and ISD 12.2.0.   I also have VS 2013 and VS 2015 installed.

Could this be a Windows 10 issue?

*now I am even more glad I haven't upgraded to horrible Win10!

HTH,

Miles

Thank you Miles for VS2017 work-ability info. Probably, I will try it cautiously as well.

Or upgrade your 11.1 project to VS2013?

Unfortunately, Miles, that is not a solution, as my clients are still working with VS2010.

Alas, none of the solutions have proved viable, and I had to bite the bullet, completely reset my Windows 10 and am now in the tedious process of reloading all my software.

Lesson learned: I will be picking up a cheap laptop to use as an installation testbed in the future, before I ever install anything on my development PC.

I use Macrium Reflect. It lets me clone a drive, even if I'm cloning the C drive while it's running Windows! And it's free!
Unfortunately, in this case, it would not help, as I would just end up with a duplicate drive with the same problem

If the cloning was done prior to the installation of VS 2017 or any major installations will save you from trouble. Good backup software like Acronis has version control where you can restore at a point before the problem happened.

Cheers,
